analogical change

analogical change
analogical change,
Linguistics.
1. the alteration of one linguistic form, such as an inflected word, in conformity with another form regarded as similar. The alteration, in children's usage, of men to mans in conformity with the predominant pattern of forming English plurals is done by analogical change.
2. the replacement of such a form by another regarded as equivalent and perhaps preferable, such as the substitution of frozen for the earlier froren because of the pattern suggested by other parts of the verb, freeze and froze.
Usage Analogical change in English has led to a regularization of inflectional endings. As a result, many former inflectional patterns have completely disappeared or persist now in a very few words. The surviving active inflections (such as -ed for the past and past participle or verbs) are used with new words entering the language and with words formerly inflected in other ways, as well as with words to which they originally applied. Some words now exist in two forms, the newer based on analogy, such as crew and crowed. The older form of such a pair is in most instances gradually falling into disuse.
